Entryway for my yard--flowers/rocks & cedar or pampas grass? Please help!?

I am wanting to make an entry way on each side of my drive way with large rocks for the back and then stack smaller rocks in the front and for the inside I%26#039;m not sure whether to put pampas grass plants or those decorative looking cedar type trees. and then outlining the front with different colored flowers. I will probably stick some pretty solar lights in it as well...Please give me your opinions on what you think as far as my plants go...or any different ideas you might have..I hope you all can understand the design I%26#039;m going for :)

The pampas grass will get very tall, are you sure that you want to hide your rocks? While I like the look that you%26#039;re after, you might want to get the height from something like a rose-of-sharon that will give you height, color, and texture but still see the rocks. Good luck!
Reply:DON%26#039;T USE PAMPAS GRASS. It will cause you more headaches than you%26#039;ve ever dreamed. It has very dusty pollen, it develops a root system that will come back to haunt you, Its base will get thicker %26amp; thicker, even if you try to cut it back; and if you ever change your mind about it, you%26#039;ll have to pay a professional landscaper to get rid of it. We just had this problem last year at a house we bought. The previous owners had gone Pampas grass crazy, and it cost us a fortune just to get them thinned out. You WILL regret using Pampas grass!
Reply:Depending on how much you want blocked. Trees and grass with grow tall and block views. Is this what your looking for? Maybe put your pampas grass on the other side of the big rock since they will grow taller than the rock. That could be the final edge or backdrop since you won%26#039;t be able to see past it. You may want to spread mulch around the bottom of the rocks or wood chips so you don%26#039;t have weeds growing around the rocks. That would be hard to keep clean, or set the other two larger rocks on pond pebbles, or pea gravel, both which are small gravel pieces to finish off. I like mulch better cause it would look pretty with your flowers and make them stand out more.
Reply:Why not try planting alpines or trailing plants between the boulders? These will add colour and interest but will not totally cover the rocks from view; ferns contrast nicely with rock. I%26#039;d avoid the pampas grass though; it may look out of place.
